On July 15, we learned that we were chosen for this year’s competitive grant of $25,000 for an emerging program from the TD Ameritrade Institutional NextGen Program. They award only one of these per year, and selection was based on the application that we submitted in May.
As a grant winner, we were invited to send two representatives to visit the New York Stock Exchange and participate in the closing bell ceremony on Monday, July 21. Representing Texas A&M University were faculty member Nathan Harness and senior Mariel Braun (AGEC ’14).
TD Ameritrade Institutional provides comprehensive brokerage and custody services to more than 4,000 fee-based, independent Registered Investment Advisors (RIAs). The NextGen Scholarship and Grant Programs help to promote careers in financial planning and attract top talent to the advisor industry. Employment of personal financial advisors is projected by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to grow 27 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations.
Through the TD Ameritrade Institutional NextGen Scholarship and Grant Programs, ten $5000 scholarships are awarded to students, one $50,000 grant to a university with an established program, and one $25,000 grant to a university with an emerging program. We received this last one. More specifically, this one time grant will be used to strengthen our emerging program to offer an undergraduate degree specializing in Financial Planning. A related objective is to meet an important need of the profession by recruiting women and Hispanics to careers in financial planning.
