Program Admission

The Minor in Financial Planning is limited to undergraduate students who have been admitted into a degree-seeking program at Texas A&M University. If you do not need academic credit, then you may be interested in our Extended Learning Certificate Program.

Details at a Glance

  • The Financial Planning minor can be added to a student’s degree plan at any time.
  • Some majors have restrictions or require special permission. Students should check with their academic advisor for any departmental requirements for adding minors.
  • Admission into the Financial Planning Program does not guarantee enrollment into an academic program at Texas A&M University.
  • Course registration requires junior/senior classification.
  • Successful completion of the minor will be certified by a degree audit. The minor will appear on official TAMU transcripts post-graduation.

Before completing the Minor Program Application, please read through the requirements and prerequisite sections below:

  1. GPR of 2.5 or higher.
  2. Ability to complete 18 hours of minor coursework before graduation.
  3. Admission into a degree program at Texas A&M University. General Studies majors must be accepted into a major first before the minor can be added to a degree plan.
  4. Courses must be taken for academic credit with a grade of ‘C’ or better in each course.
  5. Approval for adding the minor to your degree plan is a two-step process. The first step is to submit an online Minor Program Application. If your application is approved, our team will send additional information and instructions for adding the minor to your degree plan.
  1. Junior or senior classification.
  2. Completion of –or– concurrent enrollment in ONE introductory finance course (AGEC 330 or FINC 409 or FINC 341). Enrollment in the introductory finance course can be concurrent with AGLS 435. For concurrent enrollment, students will need to submit a force request form for AGLS 435.
  3. AGLS 435 is the prerequisite course for AGLS 436, AGLS 437, AGLS 438, AGLS 439, AGLS 441, and FINP 442.
  4. Enrollment in AGLS 441 requires the completion of AGLS 435, AGLS 436, AGLS 437, AGLS 438, AGLS 439, and FINP 442. We allow students to take one of our courses concurrent with AGLS 441, but a force request form will have to be completed for AGLS 441.
  5. Contact us at financialplanning@tamu.edu to learn more about the force request process.

Additional Information:

  • Students can register for minor courses without having the minor on their degree plan. However, students should verify any restrictions, requirements, or financial aid impacts with their academic advisor.
  • All students should verify course pre-requisites for the financial planning coursework and their degree plan through the Texas A&M Course Catalog.
  • It is recommended that students spread the coursework out over 3 semesters. We do not allow students to take more than one of our courses concurrent with AGLS 441 Financial Planning Capstone.

Graduate students can take our courses for academic credit, but the minor is restricted to undergraduate students. Students should visit with their academic advisor prior to enrolling. A course override or a force request may be necessary.

Course Format

  • All courses are available online. Some courses are also available through traditional classroom delivery.
  • The Minor Coursework table above shows when courses are typically taught throughout the year.
  • The majority of this minor is only offered online. Online courses at the university will sometimes incur additional fees on your tuition statement.
