Bill Carter | A Legacy of Leadership


The Bill Carter ’69 Leadership Award, established in 2021, was named after Bill Carter to honor his extraordinary contributions to the financial planning industry, his commitment to education, and his dedication to the Texas A&M community. Bill Carter embodies the essence of leadership and exemplifies the core values of the award, inspiring future leaders to follow in his footsteps. A Visionary Leader

Bill Carter founded Carter Financial Management in 1976, laying the foundation for a firm that would grow into a prominent player in the financial planning sector. Under his leadership, the firm now manages over $1 billion in assets, catering to the diverse financial needs of its clients.

Bill Carter’s impact extends far beyond his company. He has been a driving force in shaping the personal financial planning profession and has left an indelible mark on industry standards. His roles as Chairman of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFPB), the International Association of Financial Planning (IAFP), and the Foundation for Financial Planning (FFP) underscore his dedication to raising professional standards.

Bill Carter’s insights have been sought after by major publications and media outlets, including The New York Times, Money Magazine, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and The Dallas Morning News. His interviews on various television and radio programs have allowed him to share his expertise with a broader audience.

Servant Leadership

Bill Carter is a staunch advocate of serving others, both professionally and in the community. As an involved Texas A&M alumnus, he has consistently demonstrated his commitment to service.

Mr. Carter has served as the President of the Association of Former Students and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Texas A&M Foundation, actively participating in various Aggie organizations.

Bill has extended his service to the Dallas community. He has served on the boards of Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, Baylor University Medical Center, and The Senior Source in a desire to make a difference in the community around him.

Awards and Accolades

Bill Carter, one of inaugural members of the Financial Planning Founders Club, is pictured with Gene Nelson, Ph.D.. Nelson’s vision to establish the Financial Planning Program in the Department of Agricultural Economics was made possible by the Founders Club members.

Bill Carter’s impact on the financial planning industry has garnered numerous accolades and recognitions. His firm, Carter Financial Management, has been consistently featured on D Magazine’s list of Top Wealth Managers in Dallas. Bill himself was included on the prestigious 2021 Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Advisors list.

His honors from Texas A&M University include induction into the Cadet Hall of Honor in 2009 and the title of Texas A&M University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Outstanding Alumnus in 2011. He was also presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a former student of Texas A&M University, recognizing his professional achievements and service to the university.

Education and Personal Life

Bill Carter’s journey began with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics from Texas A&M University. He served as student body president and distinguished military graduate during his time at the university.

Mr. Carter, as a Certified Financial Planner and President of Carter Financial Management, continues to inspire and lead, leaving an enduring legacy of values-based leadership.
